In simple terms: AI is the development of systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as reasoning, decision-making, and language. But did you know that there are different categories of AI? In this article, I will discuss the most common ones and what sets them apart.

Types of Artificial Intelligence Categories

There are several types of AI, but the most common ones are divided into three categories:

Weak or Narrow AI

This category of AI is designed to perform specific and concrete tasks, and cannot be applied to other tasks that have not been previously programmed. An example of weak AI would be the voice recognition system of a smartphone. This system is designed to recognize specific words and perform actions, such as making a call or sending a text message, but cannot perform other tasks that have not been previously programmed.

General or Strong AI

Unlike weak AI, general AI is designed to perform multiple tasks and adapt to different situations. This type of AI has the ability to learn from its environment and make decisions based on that information. An example of general AI would be a personal assistant, such as Siri or Alexa. These systems can answer questions, make reservations, and control devices in the home, among other tasks.

Superintelligent AI

This category of AI does not yet exist, but refers to AI that has a much higher level of intelligence than a human being. It is believed that this AI could solve complex problems much more efficiently than a human being, and could even make decisions that humans could not understand or foresee.

Other Categories of Artificial Intelligence

In addition to these three categories, there are other categories of AI that are worth mentioning:

Symbolic AI

This type of AI uses logical rules and symbols to represent knowledge and solve problems. This type of AI is used in expert systems and in the creation of chatbots.

Knowledge-based AI

This type of AI is based on a previously defined knowledge base to make decisions and solve problems. It is used in the creation of recommendation systems and in fraud detection.

Evolutionary AI

Evolutionary AI uses genetic algorithms to improve the performance of a system over time. That is, AI is adjusted and improved based on the results obtained. This type of AI is used in the optimization of transport systems, in the creation of robots, and in the optimization of industrial processes.

Reactive AI

Reactive AI focuses on responding to specific situations in the present. This means that it does not have the ability to make decisions based on previous experiences. An example of reactive AI is IBM’s Deep Blue program, which defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997. Deep Blue had no knowledge of Kasparov’s previous games, it could only analyze the current position of the pieces and make a decision accordingly.
